- Review of the Data Governance Leader as an Egeria consumer
-
In 2018 we delivered a lot of basic integration function. In 2019 building we need to focus on building a community of consumers. With consumers comes publicity, feedback and hopefully new contributors.
In the last meeting we agreed to spend time reviewing what must be added to Egeria to make it easier for different groups of people to make use of Egeria. The idea was to pick a different persona and talk through what they would be interested in, how they would/should go about learning more about Egeria, trying it and (hopefully) choosing to keep it as a key part of their work.
The first persona we picked was the leader of a Data Governance program. In Coco Pharmaceuticals this is Jules Keeper.
-
Common situations for governance leaders:
- May be new to role and/or organization.
- Inherited a messy data landscape.
- Not sure where and how to begin.
- Not a hands on technical person - more of an executive and/or strategy and/or enterprise architecture team.
- Not easy to install software locally.
-
Egeria support for the Governance Leader is the Governance Program OMAS.
-
Examples -
-
- AOB
- General introductions
- Reviewed the materials and had these suggestions
- Make sure we have a list of additional resources (tools, best practices and contact groups).
- Think about
- what success/failure looks like.
- how to monetize data
- other sources of data such as open data
- cloud solution
- Seed metadata
- Mockups of different types of dashboards
- Need to cover why someone would use the governance program APIs rather then powerpoint
- Management of complexity
- Pre-canned content
- Guiding on the art of the possible
- Need a UI
- Other topics
- Expectations on time scale - what can be done in a quarter, a year?
- Indicators of culture and what is helpful and what is not.
- Which personas/stakeholders do you need onside?
- Additional Notes from Susan ...
- open data & monetizing are important considerations for CDO
- resources such as conferences & white papers are important for a newly appointed CDO
- CDO 's team is typically small - CDO appoints people for IT infrastructure, data stewards etc from various teams across the company
- CDO fails: if nothing changes
- CDO success : all parts of company affected / changes to incorporate methods/approaches to manage, govern & share data
- Diagram - data strategy - add box about monetization
- CDO benefits from egeria : Systematically define a data strategy & governance program
- governance program OMAS can be used independently of other products that implement egeria apis - e.g., as a thinking tool
- no such tool - that cdo can use today - (typically spreadsheets & wikis & powerpoint are used today)
- each use case / persona has an api
- CDO cannot use api directly - ui needs to be developed
- complex knowledge graph sits behind the api - (policies, strategies ... )
- dashboard showing regulations
- link regulations to metadata - on dashboard - ui
- example worked on last year GDPR ......... privacy pack
- dashboard mock-up to show the art of the possible or coco pharmaceuticals dashboard + mockups of other dashboards
- duration of success cycle
- organizational culture - how / who supports the CDO - how they find supporters
- often CDO reports to board / member
- AOB
- Any progress on the CI Badge?
- Identified a security expert to help with the security section
- Need more work on test coverage.
- John suggested filling in the form.
- Planning for the next few weeks:
- Information Architect/Subject Area Owner working on glossaries etc (Erin Overview/Faith Broker)
- IT Infrastructure/developer - setting up Egeria (Gary Geeke)
- IT Manager/Enterprise Architect (Erin Overview/Polly Tasker)
- What have we learnt/learned.
Every Wednesday 8:00am to 9:00am US Eastern
