Why? Isn't X's purpose to manage it's own content?

Definitely it is! However, don't you find this easier to use and maintain than what X offers? SLM's use case can be extended and not limited to these:

  • Game related files inside Workshop and Downloading folder are also processed
  • Have apps auto-installed after movement, without needing of file validation
  • Take and maintain backups, compress them without a special method to save some space
  • (Windows 10 only) Compress games with Windows' compact function
  • Library Cleaner that lists headless folders, headless acf files and duplicate game installations with ability to ignore items

There's already programs out there to move Steam games like SteamTool and SteamMover, the rest seems a pointless clone of what Steam itself does. Am I missing something?

Both mentioned programs are uses junction points while SLM is moving the files itself as Steam does supports having more than one library for years. They are REALLY outdated now. Also their sources are not public.

the rest seems a pointless clone of what Steam itself does

Steam Library Manager is the first program to support Steam's built-in multi library system. SLM's first public release goes back to 5 Apr 2015 and Steam gained the ability to move games almost 2 years after SLM's first release!

Will this delete my unused Steam files?

It will list detected files and you can delete, move or ignore them. See the Library Cleaner page or feel free to contact me.

Can't you just cut and paste? Steam should recognize it.

You can. Here is what you should do:

  • Copy files inside '/SteamApps/common/GameName/' folder
  • Copy 'appmanifest_GameId.acf' file inside '/SteamApps/' folder if you don't want to wait for the validation -aka recognition- process
  • (If there is any) Copy 'state_GameId_?ManifestId?.patch' files and '/GameId/' folder inside '/SteamApps/downloading/' folder.
  • (If there is any) Copy 'appworkshop_AppId.acf' file inside '/SteamApps/workshop/' folder and '/SteamApps/workshop/content/AppId/' folder.
  • Restart Steam

Can i move games w/o needing to make Steam find the files again, so after i move it i can just press play?

Yes! SLM moves the game's appmanifest file too. Simply restart Steam after moving it and you are good to play.

Can you move multiple games at once?

You can select and task multiple games at once.
