Add constant velocity and constant acceleration factors on manifolds - #24
Conversation
Adds eight motion-prior factor batches (constant-velocity and constant-acceleration, each for SE(3)/SO(3)/SE(2)/SO(2)) that constrain pose evolution given explicit body-velocity/-acceleration states, per Tang/Yoon/Barfoot's WNOA/WNOJ motion-prior derivation. Pose and velocity/acceleration are kept as separate state batches connected by these factors; no changes to Problem/HessianStructureBuilder were needed. Also fuses the paper's closed-form Q(dt)^-1 process-noise covariance into the residual/Jacobian via a new MotionPriorInformationFactorBatch<T, Dim> convenience wrapper (plus 8 named aliases) built on the existing generic InformationFactorBatch, using a closed-form Cholesky factorization (no numerical linear algebra). Along the way, found and fixed a latent transpose bug in InformationFactorBatch's residual weighting that was invisible in every prior caller because they only ever used identity matrices. Each factor has finite-difference Jacobian and zero-residual tests; the SE(3) constant-velocity factor additionally has a Gauss-Newton convergence test and an end-to-end example (examples/motion_prior). See docs/design/motion_prior_factors.md for the full derivation. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Introduce a compile-time manifold facade (BetweenFactorBatch<Manifold>, PriorFactorBatch<Manifold> with CTAD deduction; ConstantVelocityFactorBatch/ ConstantAccelerationFactorBatch<Manifold> with explicit template argument) built on new distinct per-manifold ambient types in cunls/common/types.h, so callers see fewer factor class names. Reorganize cunls/factor/ into between/, prior/, motion/, and information/ subfolders to match. Fix a transpose bug in InformationFactorBatch's residual weighting found while building MotionPriorInformationFactorBatch. Bump the library version to 0.2 (C++ and Python). Update the motion_prior example to demonstrate the covariance-weighted ConstantVelocityInformationSE3FactorBatch (the main way users should apply the paper's closed-form process-noise covariance), document the facade in the Sphinx API reference, and remove now-dangling references to the (intentionally uncommitted) facade design doc. Add a PGO/SBA-scale NVTX-instrumented performance test for the constant-velocity factor and its information-fusion wrapper; profiling under nsys confirmed the new factor kernels are a small fraction of total GPU time (the sparse linear solver dominates, as expected), after fixing an NVTX scoping bug in the test itself that had misattributed solver time to factor construction. Update the implementation summary to the new subfolder paths.
This PR moves the files into motion/ and information/ subfolders. The implementation summary still uses the old flat paths:
- Line 15:
cunls/factor/constant_{velocity,acceleration}_*is nowcunls/factor/motion/.... - Line 17:
cunls/factor/motion_prior_information.{h,cu}is nowcunls/factor/information/....
The same stale paths also appear at Line 247 (information_factor_batch.h), Lines 254 and 303 (motion_prior_information.h), Line 315 (information_factor_batch.cpp), and in the §3.3 file tree (Lines 354-362). Readers who follow these references will not find the files.
Line 12 also says the convergence test uses "Gauss-Newton". The test RecoversVelocityWithPosesFixed uses LevenbergMarquardtMinimizer.

… issues Switch examples/pose_graph_optimization and examples/custom_factor from the per-manifold SE3BetweenFactorBatch/PriorVectorFactorBatch<1> to the manifold-generic facade (BetweenFactorBatch, PriorFactorBatch<Vector<1>>), matching the intended usage already shown in the motion_prior example. Update the corresponding README.md files, the top-level examples/README.md, and the Sphinx quick_start/tutorial walkthroughs to match. While rebuilding the examples target (previously untested this session) found and fixed a pre-existing bug: SE3BetweenFactorBatch/BetweenFactorBatch<SE3> takes no cuBLASHandle argument, but pose_graph_optimization's main.cpp and the tutorial's code sample both passed one, which fails to compile as CTAD (and would have failed with the old spelling too). Also fixed clang-format violations across every file touched by this branch (examples, tests, python bindings) that were pre-existing before this branch touched those files but were failing CI's whole-file clang-format check once the files became part of the diff. … types - MotionPriorSqrtInformationStorage now synchronizes its stream after computing the sqrt-information matrices, so the buffer is populated before the constructor returns and Evaluate() can safely be called on a different stream. - Delete docs/design/ permanently (was never meant to be shipped) and remove every remaining reference to it from code comments and the Sphinx API docs. - docs/sphinx/api/factor.rst: the manifold-facade and MotionPriorInformationFactorBatch template declarations use cpp:class instead of cpp:function, matching what they actually are. - python/src/bind_factor.cpp: fix pointer types left as generic Matrix<N>* after the strong-ambient-type migration for SE2/SO2/SO3/Similarity2/Similarity3 between factors and the SO2/SO3 prior factors — these didn't compile against the new per-manifold types (verified by actually building _pycunls_core, which hadn't been done this session before now).
