Problematic code:

IFS="\t"

Correct code:

IFS=$'\t'

Rationale:

IFS="\t" splits on backslash and the letter "t". IFS=$'\t' splits on tab.

Exceptions

It's extremely rare to want to split on the letter "n" or "t", rather than linefeed or tab.
