Caldera

Caldera Image

From an outsider's perspective, the Caldera may appear to be a mundane alpine zone with towering yet barren cliffs. Yet, if you hike up to the top, you will instead see a brilliant turquoise lake within, an oasis from the surrounding icy climate. The Caldera marks one of the most unique biomes in Terrestria, and is a treat to any explorer who comes across it.

The Caldera is a high altitude body of water surrounded by a very tall ridge which itself is surrounded by foothills. The ridge itself is dotted with tiny spruce-like redwood and hemlock trees, while the surrounding hills have larger redwood and hemlock trees.

Generation

The Caldera has a 33% chance of replacing one of Minecraft's Mountains biomes with itself. It is comprised of 4 component biomes:

  • Caldera (terrestria:caldera): The primary body of water.
  • Caldera Beach (terrestria:caldera_beach): The transition between the water and the ridge, helping smooth between the icy cliffs and the warm water.
  • Caldera Ridge (terrestria:caldera_ridge): A cliff-like ridge encompassing the body of water.
  • Caldera Foothills (terrestria:caldera_foothils): A far less hilly area around the ridge that contains redwood and hemlock trees.

Climate

The Caldera is situated within cold and icy surroundings, yet the residual heat from the collapsed magma chamber within gives the lake area a near tropical climate, a warm refuge from the snow and ice that line the ridge and foothills.

Trivia

The Caldera itself is not directly inspired by any existing biome, but it certainly draws much inspiration from other biomes: the beaches mimic those from Beta 1.7.3 and the foothills are significantly inspired by ExtrabiomesXL. Above all, it is a demonstration of the power of Fabric's biome generation.
