Project Description
Our group's Diet Assessment App has, as of right now, one main goal and that is to assist a dietitian's patient with completing a 24-hour recall dietary assessment. What this recall entails is having the patient inform the dietitian with everything they consumed in the past 24 hours. While this method of assessment occasionally returns fairly accurate results, there are multiple factors that affect the overall success of the recall. The main limiting factor is that people simply don't remember every single thing they have eaten or drank over a 24 hour span so the results are skewed, therefore limiting the dietitian's ability to provide an appropriate course of action. With our app, patients will easily be able to take a picture of what they are about to eat, append any necessary comments/descriptions, and then upload the content to a server where the dietitian can review their submissions. Theoretically, this could greatly reduce the percentage of error from the patient's end when performing a 24-hour recall. Once we have successfully implemented this feature, our client has proposed a much more challenging problem to us that they would like to see handled which is figuring out a way to accurately identify portion sizes of the food in submitted pictures from patients. This is much more difficult than the primary goal because the majority of patients do not possess the ability to determine their portions in terms of weight by just looking at it. The app will run on Android platforms.
