Companies And People

Claire Atkin edited this page Jun 27, 2014 · 43 revisions

This page documents various bits and pieces about Companies and People, which are the primary data objects in SHC.

This is both a scratchpad for talking about new features as well as documenting what is in the codebase. If you'd like to suggest a feature, please look at the existing issues »

Company Category

Also called filters on SG. This is a managed taxonomy. Companies can be part of more than one category.

Startups: businesses slated for high growth, with venture capital or not. Must be solving a new problem?

Investors: people and firms who invest in tech startups at any level. Specify level if possible.

Accelerators/Incubators: businesses (not for profit or not) who trade services, connections, and guidance for money and/or equity in startup companies.

Community Enablers: Agencies and organizations who consider their business to be affiliated with startup culture in Vancouver. Including Media/Press, Non-Profits, Coworking Spaces, Other Community Enablers, Government, Associations, Clubs, Online Communities, Foundations, Hackerspaces, Event Venues, Makerspaces.

Academic: Schools and universities who are linked through student programs, funding of programs, or otherwise to the startup economy.

Government: 100% publicly-funded agencies and government departments.

Media: Vancouver-based news sources and popular blogs

Service Providers: Paid services for startups in the form of legal services, accounting, design, SRED reimbursement, immigration consulting, and other services.

Web Consulting: a tech company or consulting agency not focused on high growth, but heavily engaged in the startup sector (like Chloi, Invoke, Brewhouse).

Established Companies: a.k.a successful startups. These are startups companies who were once considered startups, who grew very quickly, and who are now considered established tech companies by a qualitative measure of opinion.

Events: self-explanatory. We don't sync events.

These are Startup Genome's categories, and where they would fall under for WeAreYVR's: This is changing - categories will be the same for SG and for SHC

People to Company Roles

People can add themselves to a company and indicate their role.

The roles are:

  • Founder
  • Employee
    • Would be nice to also capture title, but don't think we can tackle that quite yet
  • Freelancer / Contractor
  • Board Member
  • Investor
  • Service Provider
  • Consultant
  • Advisor
  • Client
    • A person can add themselves as a client of something. This might overlap with user?
  • User (but so overlap, copy reads: "[Name] uses X, Y, Z."
    • This helps build the graph of what people use what local software / services
    • Is there a better word than user?

People Categories

For now, we're thinking of using these things as "tags". People can tag themselves.

  • Developer - programmer, architect, team lead, etc.
  • Designer - UX, graphic design, etc.
  • Executive - C-level, etc.
  • Investor - e.g. VC, angel, government program administrator, etc.
  • Business - eg. HR, biz development, etc.
  • Marketing - eg. technical marketing, product marketing, etc.
  • Professional - lawyer, accountant, doctor, professor
