BIII project and community: ROADMAP
BIII (biii.eu) was created under the auspices of NEUBIAS, the first European network of bio image analyst, but it aims to have to reach and to be contributed by a broader community in the field of bio image analysis. It aims to bridge the different actors of the community in a central place to refer tools and workflows used in bio image analysis. www.neubias.org
What is bio image analysis compared to bio image informatics? Bio image analysis is the part of bio image informatics, without the storage and querying aspects of bio image informatics. Bio image informatics: [field of ]“developing novel image processing, data mining, database and visualization techniques to extract, compare, search and manage the biological knowledge in these data-intensive problem” [deluge of molecular and cellular microscopic images] Peng, H, Bioinformatics 2008 “This field encompasses the storage, querying, management, analysis, and visualization of complex image data from digital imaging systems used in biology” Swedlow et al, Annual Rev BioPhys 2009.
Bio image analysis: “ This task of bioimage informatics [] what we refer to as ‘bioimage analysis’ [is to] enable [computers] to automatically distinguish between relevant and irrelevant image information and to recognize and model spatial or temporal patterns of interest that could confirm or refute the hypotheses underlying the given experiment through quantitative analysis. This task of bioimage informatics is what we refer to as ‘bioimage analysis’.” Meijering, E et al. Nature Biotechnology , 2016
The planned technical milestones are available from this list , and the technical roadmap from the reported issus is here, (an overview is provided below)
- Getting different communities involved to feed BIII with their own needs: ideally we would like to host satellite events in biological symposium or events, and to support communities or projects that aims referencing sofwtare tools for their community.
