No way to bypass a freeze, if we just let people bypass freezes there would be no reason for them to exist. And they instead would have been listed under the "Restricted" section. No I am not closing this or rejecting it. Just saying this will not be reviewed until a species doc (Which I am doing currently, just been busy irl and with other projects I consider more important) |
Without a species design doc this atm can only be a loose sketch, so I'll not dwell on the usual SS14 problem with "thinking of drawbacks" and "everything is damage:
i.e.: Could imagine that they can wear hats but the hats are "poorly attached" and can fall off, and they're banned from helmets entirely. As Myra says the species stuff is gonna be frozen for quite a bit; it's not just the doc that's needed but SS14 already has a lot of core species and most of them are badly-fleshed-out. I'd love to see this on a downstream though! |
I need this! This would for sure be my go-to species if it gets added. I agree with Panda that it would be funny if some hats were whitelisted, such as a moathroach, crown, CE beret, or cargo cap. I like the idea of hats being literally just balanced on top of their head though, with it falling off if they get slipped or crit. I can imagine someone slipping a fungoid captain and stealing their hat haha |
While I love my Vox, I would adore playing as a Fungoid! Hopefully this species, or another fungal species, will be brought in following the unfreezing of species development! |
Yea I kinda knew inside that this probably wouldnt pass the freeze, so I understand and respect that. But I dont quite understand why you said that there is no way to bypass freezes when you do allow bypasses, for example when the pr in question meets the right unknown conditions like wizard lobby song, or the right openly-stated conditions such as with guns. Even the given explanation for freezes uses the phrase, 'especially if', referring to the chance at passing a freeze. Its understandable that this doc doesnt meet the conditions, but after rereading that comment several times, I cant understand what you are going for here, maybe it was just a simple mistake, or sorry if this is me just not understanding something really obvious, but could you clarify what im not understanding?
On a better note, since seeing what you said in the 'core species design doc discussion' recently, im honestly super excited to see this doc finally exist. Best of luck with the doc. |
Thanks for the visual aid, It made me smile.
We thought of doing a head whitelist in the initial brainstorm, but I cut it when removing all the unnecessary features. Now youre making me realise that was probably bad to cut it. Ill edit the doc to mention a head whitelist and also add the poorly attached thing because the idea sounds funny.
Sorry, ill probably wait a while for the species doc to be complete first, it often looks like people quickly demotivate once their pr gets accepted downstream while there are still quality-control barriers to pass upstream. I dont want to fall into that trap. |
If you want to bypass a feature freeze just become a maintainer! The Wizard antag was merged without a design doc even though it was frozen, and it still doesn't have a design doc two months later! As far as the implementation goes, I'm a big fan. I like how there are things that are familiar from other species designs like eating rotten food or biologically produce resources that can be used to slightly terraform the station while still having a clear flavor and tone that is its own. The strengths and weaknesses make sense, and I think that them being a slower being that acts deliberately makes a lot of sense. I love the idea of them having their own ability to terraform parts of the station, and unlike arachnids they have a reason for doing so. I could see this creating slight friction with sec/jani, and I would be interested to see how that played out. Also the mental image of a giant mycelium guy with tattoos and markings made of lichen goes incredibly hard. As a final thing, for some reason I feel like they would give great hugs, but at the same time I worry about the health of the person being hugged... |
While its fun to do, dont always assume the worst, theyre probably reasonable people and have had private discussions about whats needed for stuff like wizard to get merged.
I like this idea |
New species, Fungoid/Myconid/Mycellian. (name undecided)
Open to suggestions and feedback, especially with the naming.
I can swap the spellings to from English to American if there is a standardisation requirement that I missed.
credit to my amazing younger sibling for coming up with many of the initial design ideas.
In light of the feature freeze stating: "no maintainer consensus on what the 'minimum' requirements for a round start species is", and the lack of PR guidelines, Ive attempted to make this doc cover all potential requirements that there might be. Without knowing the specifics that the maintainers are undecided on, I can only hope that all the extra work put in here is in the right areas to bypass the freeze.
This will sit as a draft for a short while to give a chance for anybody to input ideas or opinions.
