About Mozilla Firefox and MacType

Note: MacType will work with Firefox in DirectWrite mode without doing the below. However DirectWrite font rendering isn't as configurable as MacType GDI, which replaces GDI with the FreeType rendering engine from Linux. To do this, read on...

To use MacType in GDI mode from Firefox version 69.x.x and onwards (courtesy of @sur0g), do:

  1. Navigate to about:config
  2. Search for cleartype
  3. Change gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode to 5

To use MacType in GDI mode for Firefox versions 68.x.x and earlier (not recommended), do:

  1. In Firefox navigate to about:config
  2. Search for azure
  3. Change both graphics.canvas.azure.backends and graphics.content.azure.backends to direct2d1.1,cairo,skia image
  4. Search for gfx.direct2d.disabled
  5. Double-click to change it to true
  6. Close and restart Firefox for the changes to take effect. Fonts should now be rendered with MacType
