Sorry for the late response. I am by no means an expert in Gtk, and have used Python mostly for numeric calculations.
I was able to debug the script such that it does not crash any more, but it still throws a lot of warnings and, what's worse, does not do the tiling it's supposed to be doing! So I rather not push it.
