Seems the `async` API is compatible, other than the mysterious `this.async()` last parameter provided. But we will see via tests

This PR bumps
asyncin a few locations to remove the duplicated dependency. (Although this doesn't fully cover it's usage, which I detail in #1404 )Seems the
asyncAPI is wonderfully stable, so we may not have to change much to get these packages up to date, but we will let tests confirm this.
