The KerboPower is a good entry-level reactor or utility platform for backup, long duration power supplies. It can still effectively power most small spacecraft and ISRU operations, if they don't use high power engines.

Getting into the higher tech realm, the Excalibur steps up generator efficiency to need less heat per unit power produced. The power produced is also high enough to run any single electric engine in the mod.
