Function flags used have the same meaning as pgr_hawickCircuits
@pgRouting/admins
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added the experimental pgr_hawickUniqueCircuits function to find circuits with unique vertex sequences, with options for start vertices, depth limits, self-loops, and U-turns on the same edge.
When parallel edges offer multiple ways to form a circuit, results retain the lowest-cost option, subject to the U-turn setting.
Documentation
Added function guidance, examples, and release notes for version 4.1.0.
Updated the pgr_hawickCircuits documentation to clarify how self-loops and U-turns are handled.
Adds the experimental pgr_hawickUniqueCircuits SQL API and its C++ processing path. The function supports start-vertex selection, depth bounds, self-loop handling, and U-turn options. The change also adds tests, executable examples, documentation, and 4.1.0 release entries.

Summary
SQL API and PostgreSQL wrapper sql/circuits/*, sql/sigs/pgrouting--4.1.sig, src/circuits/hawickUniqueCircuits.c, src/circuits/CMakeLists.txt
Adds single-start and multiple-start SQL overloads, an internal C-backed set-returning function, and the 4.1.0 signature and build entries.
Circuit expansion and result conversion include/circuits/hawick_circuits.hpp, include/cpp_common/base_graph.hpp, src/circuits/hawick_circuits.cpp, include/cpp_common/to_postgres.hpp, src/cpp_common/to_postgres.cpp, src/dijkstra/shortestPath_driver.cpp
Expands vertex cycles across parallel arcs, applies the u_turn_on_edge option, and selects the lowest-cost circuit per vertex sequence for the unique-circuit mode. The directed-circuit dispatch now passes the U-turn option.
Examples and behavior tests docqueries/circuits/*, pgtap/circuits/hawickUniqueCircuits/*
Adds SQL examples and expected output. Adds version-gated tests for API signatures, depth options, circuit output, parallel edges, self-loops, U-turns, and invalid depth values.
Documentation and release integration doc/circuits/*, doc/_static/page_history.js, doc/src/release_notes.rst, NEWS.md, locale/en/LC_MESSAGES/pgrouting_doc_strings.po, locale/pot/pgrouting_doc_strings.pot
Adds the function’s documentation and release entries. Updates existing Hawick circuit descriptions and Boost references; the catalogs also include string reflows and formatting updates.
Boost broken links #3176: The PR updates the Boost Hawick Circuit documentation URL, which is one of the outdated links identified by this issue.
Possibly related PRs
pgRouting/pgrouting#3173: Adds the shared Hawick circuit implementation and processing interface used by this PR’s wrappers and dispatch.

Explanation
Issue #3171 is active and requires pgr_hawickUniqueCircuits with canonical circuits, parallel-edge duplicate removal, start-vertex filters, depth limits, self-loop control, and u_turn_on_edge behavior. The reviewed head adds the SQL overloads, C wrapper, Boost unique-circuit enumeration, parallel-arc handling, and canonical filtering. The pgTAP suites cover signatures, canonical output, parallel edges, start vertices, depth limits, self-loops, and U-turn behavior. The documentation and documentation queries cover the new function. Plan item #3170 is not a requirement for this pull request.

Negative edge IDs collide with the circuit-start marker.
The wrapper treats any row with a negative edge value as the depth-0 start of a new circuit (src/circuits/hawickUniqueCircuits.c:103-109). That value is the input edge id, which the documented contract allows to be any integer. A circuit that traverses an edge with a negative id therefore gets a new circuit ID and a depth of 0. The rows after it are numbered under that new circuit, so the circuit is split (src/circuits/hawickUniqueCircuits.c:117-128).
Store the start marker in a field that an edge ID cannot hold. Do not use the sign of edge. Rejecting negative IDs would conflict with the documented ANY-INTEGER contract for the edge id column. The same marker logic also appears in src/circuits/hawickCircuits.c:99-113.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 2cc236d3e51d); the change keeps it reachable.

Compare each path's last node with its start vertex.
The K4 closure check compares node with start_vid only on the edge = -1 row. That row starts each circuit. No check reads the last row of each path_id. An open path such as 1→2→3→4 passes the checks in this assertion, so a regression that returns open paths would not fail this test.
Rows are ordered by seq, and the start row comes first. Compare the last row's node with the start row's node for each path.

Update the K4 closure assertion to verify, for each path_id, that the node on
the final row by seq matches the start node from the edge = -1 row. Keep the
existing per-path checks and ensure open paths fail the assertion.
Check the last node of each circuit against start_vid.
The closed assertion compares node with start_vid only on the depth-0 marker rows (edge = -1). A path that ends at a different vertex still passes it, and the count, distinct-node, and cost checks also pass. Add a check on the last row of each path_id. The row with the highest seq is the last row.
start_vid must be aggregated in this grouped query because it is not in GROUP BY. max(start_vid) is constant per path, like the existing max(agg_cost).

Add a false-flag test where a bidirected edge has a separate return edge.
The u_turn_on_edge tests for pgr_hawickUniqueCircuits never check that u_turn_on_edge => false replaces a same-edge U-turn when a distinct-edge return edge exists. Each false-flag assertion either matches the true-flag output or has no same-edge two-cycle. A build that always keeps the U-turn therefore passes the suite. Add an assertion where edge 1 is bidirected and edge 2 returns 2→1 with id 2, and expect the distinct-edge two-cycle.

Restore the vertex-zero behavior for pgr_hawickCircuits in the shared start vid description.
The shared start vid row no longer says that 0 returns every circuit. pgr_hawickCircuits includes this block, and its scalar overload still maps 0 to an empty array. An empty array returns all circuits, so a reader who passes 0 expecting only circuits through vertex 0 gets the wrong result. Keep the 0 sentence for pgr_hawickCircuits. Document the unique-circuits difference on its own page, not in the shared block.

Remove "when possible" from the Example 3 title, and state that same-edge U-turns remain allowed.

Keep the cheaper parallel candidate in utility_bookkeep_parallel.
The Case 4 fallback writes book[keyf] even when an existing entry for that key is cheaper. With edges A (cost 1), B (cost 2), and C (cost 3), C replaces B. With u_turn_on_edge => false, the two-hop circuit then costs 4 instead of 3. Write the entry only when no entry exists, or when the new cost is lower.

Bound parallel-arc expansion before storing circuits.
With u_turn_on_edge => false, expand_parallel_arcs stores every combination of parallel arcs for each vertex cycle. add_parallel can add one parallel arc per hop, so a long ring of bidirectional minimum edges can produce 2^n edge circuits for one vertex cycle. get_tuples applies unique_circuits only after all of them are stored, which can exhaust memory or time.

Review comment at @src/cpp_common/to_postgres.cpp around lines 401 - 403:
Bound parallel-arc expansion in expand_parallel_arcs before circuits are stored,
rather than relying on unique_circuits in get_tuples after full expansion.
Prevent exponential combination growth while preserving the required circuit
results; establish the appropriate bound and behavior when it is reached,
including for long rings of bidirectional minimum edges.
