Add graphics layers and drawing tools - #26
Conversation
Insert › Graphics draws points, lines, curves, freehand lines, polygons, lassos, rectangles, circles and ellipses in graphics layers, whose features keep their own fill, outline, width and text size. Text and dynamic text (map name, scale, date, time, coordinate system, layer count, centre) are drawn by the label engine; pictures stretch a PNG or JPEG over a dragged rectangle. Keep Tool leaves the drawing tool active.

📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Graphics layers work, but pictures can show the wrong image, and an oversized image in a project can use excessive memory while rendering. Pictures can also cover shapes drawn after them in the same layer. These picture-rendering problems should be fixed before merging. Pre-merge checks |

- Key the decoded-picture cache by the picture's length and ends instead of hashing all of its base64 each frame, skip off-screen pictures, and evict the oldest picture instead of clearing the cache. - Draw pictures before the selection highlight so a selected picture still shows its outline. - Read picture files through a size-capped reader, and validate pictures from their header without decoding them. - Keep the drawing tool when a graphic fails (a click without a drag). - graphics.style refuses a call with nothing to change, and sets text only on text graphics.

rustgis_map::graphics::text_color to skip labels when the layer opacity is fully

the existing text rendering behavior for non-transparent graphics layers.
- Line 564: Update the graphics rendering flow around the `layer.graphics` check
so pictures are drawn in graphics-row order alongside feature geometries, not in
a separate pass after all shapes. Preserve each row’s relative draw order so a
later shape can cover an earlier picture.

complete content on cache hits.
- Around line 48-49: Update the image-loading flow around

- The picture cache keeps each picture's base64 and compares it on a hit, so pictures whose cheap keys collide never swap. - Pictures are size-checked from their header before decoding, refused above 20,000 px per side, and decoded under a memory limit. - Pictures draw in their row's turn, keeping graphics in order. - Graphics text follows the layer's transparency. - Dynamic text expands in one pass (a value holding a token stays as is). - Freehand and lasso sketches stop growing at 20,000 points. - The text graphic dialog is titled "Add Text". - A failed picture keeps the drawing tool active.

- Move open_bytes' doc comment back above open_bytes. - Cap the decoded-picture cache at 256 MiB of pixels as well as 32 pictures, evicting the oldest first.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Performance concern (medium confidence): on every cache hit this does a full src == b64 string comparison. Pictures can be up to ~21 MB of base64 (MAX_PICTURE), and the map redraws every frame, so each frame costs a multi-megabyte memcmp per picture. The cache also stores a second full copy of each base64 string (b64.clone()), so memory use roughly doubles. The comment says the check is there so colliding cheap keys never swap pictures. A stronger key would avoid both costs: hash the whole string once and cache that hash, or have the dataset store an Arc<str> and compare pointers. Weakening the comparison to length plus the head and tail bytes would only repeat the collision risk the full compare is guarding against.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Keeping this as is. The map renders only when something changes (pan, zoom, edits), not every frame, and a memcmp of a few MB costs well under a millisecond, which is small next to drawing the map. The full compare is what makes the cache correct. A content hash or an Arc<str> in the dataset would avoid the second copy, but Value::Text would then need to change for every layer type, a bigger change than this PR. Leaving this open for a maintainer to weigh.

Minor (low-medium confidence): the circle radius is computed in Web Mercator metres, and the box corners c ± r are converted back with merc_to_lonlat. A circle near the poles, or with a large radius, can therefore extend past ±85° latitude or ±180° longitude. The points in points() are clamped on input, but the generated ring is not. Consider clamping the ring's coordinates, or at least noting that this is intended. Separately, a circle drawn near the antimeridian won't wrap.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This is intended: circles are drawn round on the flat (Web Mercator) map, as the user sees them while dragging. A ring that reaches past ±85° is clipped at draw time like any other geometry, and a circle across the antimeridian behaves like other features there. Leaving this open in case a maintainer wants the ring clamped.
