IF YOU CANT LOAD A SHAPEFILE: most likely cause is the program failed to allocate enough memory. Make sure you are on the latest version of Java and try again. The latest version as of this post is 8u66, and you can download it here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html If the program still won't load a shapefile, try installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING FROM A MAC: you may get a message saying you can't open it because it's from an unidentified developer. If so, you can follow these instructions: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH11436?locale=en_US to add an exception.

OTHER USEFUL SOFTWARE
for additional geospatial processing, i recommend using the free and open source software "QGIS". It is available at:
http://www.qgis.org/en/site/about/index.html
