A list of authoritative vocabularies and documentation/papers relevant to publishing MELODIES datasets.

Dataset Metadata

Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT)

http://www.w3.org/TR/vocab-dcat/

This provides the framework for describing high-level information about any kind of dataset. It should not go into much domain-specific detail. The main user of such metadata is a search engine which wants to index datasets.

GeoDCAT-AP

https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/node/139283/

Defines structures which are left open in DCAT itself, e.g. how to specify a bounding box or temporal extent. Very relevant!

Semantic Sensor Network Ontology (SSN)

http://purl.oclc.org/NET/ssnx/ssn

SSN may be used as a framework for the actual data, but some parts of it can also be useful for Dataset metadata. For example, search engines may want to index what is measured/calculated in a dataset, like "air temperate". For that, ssn:observedProperty could be used and attached to the dataset. Note that this is new territory and probably hasn't been done before in that way.

Data Quality Vocabulary (DQV)

http://w3c.github.io/dwbp/vocab-dqg.html

It "is based on DCAT that it extends with a number of additional properties and classes suitable for expressing the quality of a dataset."
