Why doesn't my personal bio or app show up on the site?

In order for a bio snippet or app to show up properly on a page, you need to edit the page you want the snippet to appear, in addition to creating and editing a file under _includes. This requires putting info in no fewer than 3 places but it means that this same pattern can be easily cascaded by anyone.
