We're handling images a bit differently in the new site.

In Workflow, we will add each image as a separate piece of content (outside of articles and event pages), and then reference them from the article and event pages. This will allow us to build a library of images that can be used in a variety of places across the site. And hopefully, each image will have the metadata associated with them to make them a more valuable part of our archive.

Adding Images

  1. Open the "Media" page — On the left-hand side of the page, there is a content type called "Media". That is where we'll be uploading images, not the Media link at the top of the page.
  2. Click on "New Media" image

Here is a breakdown of what we should be adding for each image.

Upload an Image File

🚨 NOTE — there are a few issues with uploading images, so here are a few things you'll want to be mindful of when uploading images.

  1. Filenames should be all lowercase with no spaces or special characters. The uploader should correct for this, but this is a good practice no matter what.
  2. Make sure that the filename contains the title or subject of the image. Someone should be able to scan a list of image files and pick out the one you're uploading. For example, stanley-whitney.jpg is more clear than SW-exterior_gagosian-1.jpg). This will help to keep the archive more organized in the long run.
  3. Rename like files — If you are uploading five images for an article, all of which are works by a particular artist, give all the images similar names. For example,
2020-05-stanley-whitney-1.jpg
2020-05-stanley-whitney-2.jpg
2020-05-stanley-whitney-3.jpg
2020-05-stanley-whitney-4.jpg

💡Here's how you can edit the names of files in bulk on your computer »

Image Title

The image title is a descriptive name or title of the image.

Stanley Whitney, portrait

We will need to develop a style for this. For right now, assume that this title will be live somewhere on the site.

Image Alt

This is the text that visually impaired people will encounter when using a screen reader. Be colorful and descriptive when writing this copy, even to the point of being poetic. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who can't see this image and imagine what would they like to know most about it. They will appreciate the extra effort.

✏️ Drawings by Phong can all use a common alt text on them. We'll need to develop a style for these.

Image Caption

This is the caption that will appear below the photo. You can add markdown in the caption to add italics if you need.

This is the person who will receive credit as the author of the image. Select the person from the dropdown. If you do not see them, you will need to add them (in a new tab).

💡Read the docs on adding new people.

Date

This is the date that the media was created in our CMS.
