Product Roadmap vs Release Plan

Since neither Agile or Scrum provide you will a template for what a Product Roadmap is, you will inevitably find yourself banging your head against the wall trying to figure out what your's should look like and what tool to use to build it. I suggest that you first learn the difference between a Product Roadmap and a Release Plan.

  • The Product Roadmap, if done correctly, will help convey the medium to long-term strategy you plan to use to achieve a certain set of goals. The Roadmap is not supposed to be focused on conveying a timeline, rather it outlines the sequence of events that make up your strategy.
  • The Release Plan, will provide you with the short term plan for executing the implementation of one or more product features or epics. The release plan will contain some dates that are based on the total story points assigned to user stories that are contained within a release and the velocity that the team is completing story points each sprint

Both the Product Roadmap and the Release Plan will help your team refine the backlog to focus on the product outcomes and goals, and to assist the product owner in their responsibility to prioritize the work.
