a guix system configuration, targeting to become eye candy while attempting to fix the issues with nivea.
much of the work happens on TODO.org, check it out to see what i’m currently working on!
in contrast to nivea (which is a nixos based reproducible system, just like aetheria), aetheria will attempt to from it’s inception have functionality for:
- ephemeral root
- in nivea, the hardware configuration became a bottleneck later on. this attempts to target ephemeral root from the onset.
- secrets management
- secrets could potentially be managed declaratively as well, but in-case i end up not liking it or decide to manage them seperately from the git repository, this should be optional.
- dynamic color themes
- nivea was originally designed for catppuccin, and with the significant amount of ports available and my lack of technical knowhow, it was arguably a good decision. yet depsite to this day believing it to be a good palette, ive come to realise being greeted to the same few colours everyday was making logging in less exciting. although with less ports than catppuccin, i want to attempt using base16 instead for this task, as base16 is a framework allows for a vast amount of themes.
- other superficial things that i missed…
- none of these things are actually unfeasible in nixos. i’d argue nixos makes it much easier through a richer ecosystem, including projects like nix-impermenance, sops-nix, and stylix. it was just that switching to guix gave me an opportunity to start over from scratch
there are some benefits i see in using guix over nix, and that mostly comes down to the module system and the language. otherwise, i’d say both are amazing projects that are pretty identical in goals.
