@awdavies What is your relationship with GSC Game World? Has GSC Game World actually released their source code under this license?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you're the rights holder of this code. Were you given permission by GSC Game World to release this source code under this BSD-style license?

@samrocketman I also think this license should be approved by GSC first. I've already tried to get in touch with them, but it will take a while before the process is finished.

Anyway, on the license itself, this is not actually a BSD license, it has clauses about commercial use. Thus it is definitely not a permissive nor an open-source license.

@samrocketman There's no relationship, GSC did not release the sources, all code was initially published on russian forum. The license is guessed to protect GSC property. There's no any permissions and nobody cares.

In that case, I won't waste my time contributing. I'd prefer not to spend time developing on something with a legally questionable source release. I do love S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and I really like the plans you guys have made for the engine. Thanks for the updates ladies/gents.

It's unfortunate nobody cares because it leaves a serious gray area for contributions (as well as opening a legal liability for anyone who obtains a copy of the source code).

Perhaps now would be a good time to try to talk with GSC again now that they've re-opened their doors.

@samrocketman Quick search in google would suggest you that this is not official source release. What's the point of coming here with questions like yours? Yes, we know. Yes, GSC knows. We are fine with it. @Armada651 contacted GSC, but releasing some public approvement would cost them time and money, which they definitely prefer to spent on their upcoming projects, not on some crap like this.

@nitrocaster What I asked was not wrong and my final decision to not contribute has some real thought as to why (which I shared with you). In short my question has a real point. If you'd like me to clarify then fine.

Sure, a quick google search would resolve many things but this is not one of them. I'd rather hear it straight from you to resolve any doubts. I had hoped it was official because posting a license misleadingly indicates it is. I don't see the point in putting up a faux license if you're actually not concerned.

My intention here was merely to ask if it was official and not to stir any bad feelings. I was interested in contributing if it was officially sanctioned by GSC.

@samrocketman OK, I understand your decision. Let's wait until GSC says something.

I really hope they approve. I think they're drastically underestimating (like many companies) the power of allowing open source contributions.
