debugging and visualizing kernel cuda code

Hi, firstly thanks for this amazing work! I'm trying to step thru the code and learn its inner workings and I'm wondering how it was debugged and visualized thru the R&D process. was it copy to cpu or printfs or using nsight... maybe someone can point a previous discussion on debugging the cuda kernels? especially the ray marching?
