Ian T. Jolliffe and D. B. Stephenson, Eds., Forecast Verification: A Practitioner’s Guide in Atmospheric Science, Second Edition. 2012. Book (edited collection) Contains several chapters that describe verification metrics for different types of predictand. Aimed at operational forecasters, graduate students and researchers. The early chapters provide a good introduction, but many of the chapters assume a reasonable understanding of probability theory.

Forecast verification training module hosted by EUMETRAIN, an international training project sponsored by EUMETSAT: http://www.eumetrain.org/data/4/451/english/courses/msgcrs/index.htm Online training course An excellent, non-technical, introduction to forecast verification, which contains three completed modules:
1) introduction;
2) verification of continuous variables; and
3) verification of categorical forecasts.
A module on verification of probability forecasts remains in production.
