8.0 The Path Forward

The priorities in a volunteer project are of course, subject to the volunteers themselves. Any advancement or bug fix is appreciated.

The priorities set here are, of course only suggestions.

The first priority should be things which stand in the way of broader adoption. To have a larger pool of users should reasonably result in a larger pool of contributors, and more help moving the code forward would always be welcome.

Bug fixes should be done on the basis of what annoys you the most.

Feature additions should be approached last, but be prioritized on the basis of broader adoption.

Cool stuff has its place, sometimes just because it would be cool, like Flamingo, which is “really cool”.

By all means, feel free to pick whatever you want to work on!

The list follows;

Better documentation (mgemeny is working on this)

A windows version (preferably with an installer, even just a client would help.)

Updating the code to allow compilation with “modern font mechanisms” (IE, get rid of use_pango_font).

Some mechanism by which various Flamingo users could be allowed to explore select ranges of IP addresses. This would allow ISPs to open flamingo views to customers!

Switches when launching the client which would allow generation of canned views of pictures to be generated for real time publication on the Web.

Switches which would allow Network Operation Centers (NOCs) to throw up canned, live views on a NOC wall-of-monitors.

Support for IPv6 and 32 bit AS numbers.

Better integration with Cacti and Weather Map.

How cool would it be if Wireshark had an option to view a Capture Buffer with Flamingo Views? Slogging through thousands of packets in a tabular view looking for patterns, is not fun. But a flamingo view would show a person what's out-of-place in a glance!

Since Flamingo is displaying internally in 3D space, how cool would it be if Flamingo was compatible with today's 3D displays?

This is of course just a list of ideas.

Any help is welcome!
