Different channels for different purposes - give it a try!

GitHub repository

For:

  • code
  • files closely related to code, like documentation, small datasets

Not for:

  • large datasets
  • Office documents and the like

GDrive folder

For:

  • sharing documents, both final and drafts
  • heavy data sets

Not for:

  • Code. Will be shared/synced through Git Hub repository
  • Documentation of code
  • Mock, test datasets (use repo)

Wiki

For:

  • project documentation
  • summaries of concepts, agreements, guidance
  • conclusions of issues, archiving of decisions

Not for:

  • report or paper drafts

GitHub issues

For:

  • ongoing discussions, issues that need resolution Not for:
  • detailed chit chat that does not need to be archived
  • large attachments (basic figures can be helpful)

How to use GitHub issues?

Slack

For:

  • day to day chit chat (that does not need archiving)

Not for:

  • substantial contents that should be found again at a later point (i.e. archiving)

Email (yes, it still exists)

For:

  • group announcements
  • chats that are too long for Slack

Not for:

  • stuff that should get archived
  • discussions that require multiple forth and backs

Phone calls

For:

  • announcements, updates
  • bigger picture discussions, seeking opinions
  • identification of issues
  • assignment of tasks

Not for:

  • detailed technical discussions
  • coding issues
