Summary

  • GetCredentialsForIdentity returns real STS session credentials (via AssumeRoleWithWebIdentity with a Cognito OpenID token), so sts GetCallerIdentity accepts them and reports the assumed-role ARN. Previously: InvalidClientTokenId.
  • STS accepts cognito-identity.amazonaws.com as a built-in issuer (no IAM OIDC provider needed) and adds the :amr condition key alongside :aud/:sub.
  • Role selection applies RoleMappings: Token (cognito:preferred_role / cognito:roles) and Rules (Equals, NotEqual, Contains, StartsWith); AmbiguousRoleResolution Deny returns InvalidIdentityPoolConfigurationException, AuthenticatedRole falls back to the pool role.
  • Login tokens from emulator-hosted user pools are RS256-verified in GetId and GetCredentialsForIdentity; bad signature, wrong key or wrong algorithm gives NotAuthorizedException.
  • Wiring in cli_cognitoidentity_wiring.go.

Tests

  • services/sts/web_identity_cognito_test.go: authenticated, unauthenticated, wrong-pool tokens.
  • services/cognitoidentity/role_selection_test.go: role-selection matrix, STS failure, signature verification.
  • cli_cognitoidentity_sts_wiring_test.go: end to end — real user pool, signed ID token, Rules mapping, GetId → GetCredentialsForIdentity → GetCallerIdentity; tampered token rejected.
  • Each was red before the fix.

Remaining gaps (in PARITY.md)

  • CustomRoleArn ignored; PrincipalTags not passed as session tags.
  • Tokens from external IdPs are not signature-verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cognito Identity can now issue credentials by assuming configured IAM roles through STS, including authenticated and unauthenticated roles and identity-pool role mappings.
    • Hosted Cognito user-pool login tokens are signature-verified, and STS trust policies can distinguish authenticated from unauthenticated identities.

GetCredentialsForIdentity now assumes the selected role through STS
AssumeRoleWithWebIdentity with a Cognito OpenID token, so the returned
credentials pass sts GetCallerIdentity as the assumed role. STS treats
cognito-identity.amazonaws.com as a built-in issuer and exposes the amr
condition key.

Role selection honours RoleMappings (Token and Rules types, Deny vs
AuthenticatedRole for ambiguous resolution) before falling back to the
pool's roles. Login tokens from emulator-hosted user pools are
signature-verified; bad signatures fail with NotAuthorizedException.

📝 Walkthrough

Cognito Identity now resolves roles from identity-pool mappings and can obtain credentials through STS. Hosted login-token signatures are verified using Cognito IDP keys. STS trust evaluation now handles Cognito Identity issuers and authentication-method claims.

Changes: Cognito Identity credentials through STS

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hosted login-token validation
services/cognitoidentity/integrations.go, services/cognitoidentity/store.go, services/cognitoidentity/login_tokens.go, services/cognitoidentity/identities.go, services/cognitoidentity/role_selection_test.go, services/cognitoidentity/PARITY.md, services/cognitoidentity/README.md
The backend can resolve signing keys and verify RS256 signatures for emulator-hosted issuers. Tests cover valid, invalid, and unhosted token signatures. The documentation lists the remaining token-validation gaps.
Role resolution and credential issuance
services/cognitoidentity/integrations.go, services/cognitoidentity/role_selection.go, services/cognitoidentity/credentials.go, services/cognitoidentity/role_selection_test.go, services/cognitoidentity/PARITY.md, services/cognitoidentity/README.md
Role selection now evaluates token and rules mappings, with configured fallback or denial behavior. Credential requests use the selected role for STS assumption when an assumer is configured, and otherwise return synthetic credentials.
Cognito Identity STS trust evaluation
services/sts/web_identity.go, services/sts/web_identity_cognito_test.go
STS recognizes Cognito Identity issuers and adds a nonempty amr claim to the trust-policy context. Tests cover authenticated and unauthenticated claims and a mismatched pool audience.
CLI integration wiring
cli.go, cli_cognitoidentity_wiring.go, cli_cognitoidentity_sts_wiring_test.go
CLI registration connects Cognito Identity to STS and Cognito IDP handlers. The end-to-end test checks assumed roles, STS caller identity, and rejection of a modified ID-token signature.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to bc5cc

Callers can obtain credentials for roles they should not qualify for by altering login-token claims or submitting a fabricated Cognito Identity token directly to STS. Fix these authorization paths before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to bc5cc

The new flow can issue emulator role sessions using claims whose authenticity has not been established. Role trust conditions still apply, but forged claims can satisfy those conditions. The impact depends on endpoint exposure and configured roles; access to actual AWS accounts is not established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: A direct STS caller can supply a fabricated Cognito token with matching audience, subject, and authentication-method claims and obtain an emulator assumed-role session. The new built-in issuer exemption skips provider validation, while managed signature verification does not authenticate this issuer. Trust conditions still restrict eligible roles, but compare caller-controlled claims rather than authenticated claims. Unlike the base with IAM lookup wired, no Cognito OIDC provider registration is required.
  • High · security · inferred: The login-map provider is not bound to the JWT issuer. A caller can present that provider with a fabricated token containing an empty or unknown issuer and a matching configured audience, bypass signature verification, obtain an identity, and submit the same token for credentials. Token or Rules mappings then consume its unverified claims. Unverified-token acceptance predates this PR, but claim-selected roles and registered STS credentials materially increase its authority. Hosted RS256 verification does not protect a token that selects the unknown-issuer bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct STS path can target roles in the reachable emulator whose trust permits the Cognito federated principal and matching claims; it is not confined to a role selected by an actual Cognito Identity request. Successful issuance yields the requested assumed-role identity. Downstream resource access depends on role configuration and authorization enforcement not established here.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Two static attack paths reach the same credential sink: a fabricated Cognito token submitted directly to STS, or an unverified login token consumed by Cognito Identity role mapping. The latter requires a resolvable mapping or configured pool role and successful STS trust evaluation. Neither path establishes access to actual AWS credentials.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — STS retains role trust-policy evaluation, including Cognito audience and authentication-method conditions. Tests reject wrong-pool and wrong-authentication-state claims, but also accept fabricated matching claims. Cognito Identity emits a literal mock signature, so this producer-consumer boundary does not currently establish cryptographic provenance.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The locked credential plan provides a consistent role and identity snapshot without holding the Cognito lock during STS execution. Concurrent changes can affect later plans, while an already-created plan may complete. No additional Cognito rollback state is introduced; session lifetime and recovery after issuance remain STS responsibilities.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Authenticate Cognito token provenance at STS before evaluating its claims, using emulator-owned signing keys or an explicitly authenticated internal exchange. Built-in issuer recognition should not itself confer trust on independently submitted tokens.
  • proposed — Resolve expected issuer and client identity from trusted provider configuration, require authenticated claims before privileged role mapping, and fail closed when the required verifier is unavailable. Any deliberately permissive compatibility mode should be explicit rather than selected by the token's own issuer.

Bind hosted-provider verification to the login-map provider.

verifyLoginSignature currently decides whether verification is required from the token-controlled iss. A caller can change iss to empty or an unknown issuer and change role claims while retaining the configured audience. Empty issuers return before verification. Unknown issuers become hosted=false and also return without verification.

GetID then stores the altered token. GetCredentialsForIdentity accepts the same token and resolveRole can select a mapped role from its altered claims before calling STS. This bypasses the original hosted user-pool signature.

Update TokenKeyResolver and userPoolKeyResolver to bind the configured provider, such as cognito-idp.<region>.amazonaws.com/<pool-id>, to the emulator user pool and its issuer/key. Require the token iss to match that resolved hosted pool and verify its signature. Skip verification only when the configured provider is confirmed to be external. Do not compare the raw provider and issuer strings because the emulator uses different representations, such as http://localhost:8000/<pool-id> for the issuer.

🌐 Web query:

AWS Cognito Identity SetIdentityPoolRoles RoleMappings provider client ID suffix aud client_id claim contract

💡 Result:

**The `:app_client_id` suffix in a `RoleMappings` key identifies the provider configuration; it is not a token claim name.** AWS documents the key format as `cognito-idp.<region>.amazonaws.com/<user-pool-id>:<app-client-id>`. ([docs.aws.amazon.com](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognitoidentity/latest/APIReference/API_SetIdentityPoolRoles.html))

For example:

```json
"RoleMappings": {
  "cognito-idp.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/us-east-1_abc:client123": {
    "Type": "Rules",
    "AmbiguousRoleResolution": "Deny",
    "RulesConfiguration": {
      "Rules": [
        { "Claim": "custom:tenant", "MatchType": "Equals", "Value": "acme", "RoleARN": "arn:aws:iam::123456789012:role/AcmeRole" }
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

For `Type: "Rules"`, `Claim` names a claim in the token used for role mapping. The app-client suffix in the mapping key and a rule’s `Claim` are separate parts of the configuration. ([docs.aws.amazon.com](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognitoidentity/latest/APIReference/API_RoleMapping.html))

**Token detail:** Cognito ID tokens carry the app client ID in `aud`; access tokens carry it in `client_id`. AWS’s documented user-pool-to-identity-pool flow uses the **ID token**, and Cognito checks its `aud` against the app client IDs registered for that identity-pool provider. So for that flow, use `aud` if you want a rule to match the client ID—but generally, the provider key already scopes the mapping to a particular client. ([docs.aws.amazon.com](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognito/latest/developerguide/getting-started-identity-pools-application.html))

One nuance: AWS’s `SetIdentityPoolRoles` reference shows the provider-key example with the client-ID suffix, while the current integration guide’s `Logins` provider key omits it. Those describe different configuration contexts; don’t assume the `RoleMappings` key and `Logins` key must be identical. ([docs.aws.amazon.com](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognitoidentity/latest/APIReference/API_SetIdentityPoolRoles.html))

Require a matching client claim for client-specific mappings.

A provider:clientId mapping matches when both aud and client_id are absent. If the pool has no matching IdentityProvider entry, token validation does not reject that JWT. resolveRole can then apply the client-specific mapping and issue its role credentials.

Remove the empty-claims match. An unsuffixed provider mapping remains available through the exact-provider branch.

Suggested fix

+		if aud == clientID || cid == clientID {
 			return mappings[key], true
 		}

Authenticate Cognito Identity tokens before trusting their claims.

AssumeRoleWithWebIdentity accepts a JWT whose iss is cognito-identity.amazonaws.com, but no signature or provenance check authenticates that token. The Cognito branch skips OIDC-provider validation, and the trust policy then evaluates attacker-controlled aud and amr claims. A direct STS request can therefore receive credentials for a Cognito-trusted role without calling GetCredentialsForIdentity.

Add a Cognito-specific signature or trusted-token provenance check before allowing this issuer branch. Do not restore generic IAM OIDC-provider lookup, because Cognito Identity is intentionally a built-in issuer.
