OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) is an API and interchange format for editorial cut information. You can think of it as a modern Edit Decision List (EDL). Existing interchange formats are either too limited or too complex. We hope to create a “just right” level of complexity tailored to animation & visual effects pipelines. OTIO will support clips, timing, tracks, transitions, markers, metadata, etc. but not embedded video or audio. Video and audio media will be referenced externally, not embedded. If the project is successful, then 3rd party vendors, animation studios and visual effects studios can work together as a community to provide adaptors for each video editing tool and pipeline.
