Localization: Spanish

Hi all, I am Victor Bottacco, a Spanish Apple Specialist with 30 years experience in the Apple ecosystem. I have translated several other apps along these years and I am recommending BetterDisplay to many clients of mine, so it would be great having it localized to Spanish.

I have already started the Spanish localization downloading the "BetterDisplay.Localizations_v2.0.9.zip" file and opening the es.xcloc
My first question is about the URLs you have in localizable strings (privacy, license, but)… are you going to create a Spanish version of those web pages? Because I am translating the last part of the URL (privacidad, licencia, comprar)

Also, in Spanish there are two ways to talk and/or write: one formal, meant for people you don't know or business, and the coloquial one… which one would prefer to identify BetterDisplay with?

I think you should not translate the URLs itself - if there will be Spanish versions for these texts, we can update the URLs in the translations later. For now only English is available.

Regarding formal or colloquial one, I am not sure the cultural connotations in Spanish - I want the app to be as accessible as possible so if colloquial would sound good to me but if that makes the app feel unprofessional, then formal might be better. :) We should probably use what Apple products normally use. What would you suggest?

Ok about the URLs, I will leave them as they are.

About the writing style, Apple always tries to be accesible and feel personal, so they usually go with the colloquial form. I will follow that when being impersonal is not possible.

I updated the localization file in the waydabber/BetterDisplay#2165 opening post to reflect the latest v2.1.0 pre-release version.

Hi @stonkol - sure! Technically you should talk to @Bottacco on how to best divide up the work. But I am not sure what progress @Bottacco made as there seems to be some lack of progress/feedback in the past few months. :) So if there is no response from @Bottacco, I think you should simply start working on the translation file.

Hi @stonkol, thanks, merged the #14 and then updated the Spanish sources based on the latest export from the app. Please pull the changes to your fork as well!

The translation now stands at 69%

Hi @cfuentea - thank you and welcome on board! 😄 🎉 I added you to the assignees. Just clone or download the repo and use XCode to open the es.xcloc file and fill out the missing items. Let me know if you need any help with this!

Feel free to use ChatGPT or any translation tool you'd like, but please review the machine translations so that they make sense and the terminology is somewhat consistent!

If you have any update (from time to time - no need to wait for full completion, I can import even a partial progress into the repository any time), just post the es.xcloc here as a zip file (or if you are familiar with GitHub, you can do a Pull Request as well).

Spanish localization really needs some love 🤗 as it now stands at only 44% right now.
