From time to time people ask for different sorts of swag. After dealing with #260 we should consider how we handle this. There are different stores available. We should think about requirements we have and maybe ask bigger vendors like Puppet and RedHat if they have some recommendations.

Requirements:

  • Print on demand. It's cheaper to keep stock on hand, but we don't have the budget for it.
  • Self service. People must be able to simply shop there like any other online store.
  • Bulk orders. Must be able to purchase in bulk and drop ship to e.g. conferences.
  • Simple and inexpensive global shipping
  • Flexible discounts
    • single use discount codes
    • grant discounts to people (e.g. a benefit of being a Vox contributor is 10% off at the store)
    • 100% discounts, including shipping -- to be used as gifts
  • Exclusive items -- e.g. a perk of sponsoring is the ability to purchase (or be gifted) sponsor branded gear
  • non expiring credits -- e.g. I can gift someone credit and they can purchase something small or save it until they get more and purchase something big
  • cross browser
  • simple to brand -- don't need a full theme, just a logo
  • high quality gear
  • variety of options
  • size inclusive / gender inclusive
  • simple and flexible administration and templating (e.g. change the logo, all products update with the new logo)
  • check price scalability with complexity. (when you add another print zone, how much more expensive does it become?)

  • Would prefer that they have some amount of global print capability to prevent shipping being as much or more then a t-shirt.

Oh, and we no longer use stickermule due to their nazi support. We use Sticker Ninja exclusively now.
