SSH access did not work for the non-root user created by my hardening script. I usually harden Debian, which is why this issue did not surface until using Helper Scripts default configuration for Alpine.
In my case, openssh-server-pam had to be installed and with UsePAM yes
Suggested paths to prevent end-users from wasting time:
Provide an FYI/note about PAM in the Helper-Scripts.com documentation for Alpine instances
Provide an APK option during install (Advanced path atleast) to select either openssh or openssh-server-pam
Replace openssh with openssh-server-pam (1,000 byte install size increase)
