Community Updates (Updated 2025 Q1)

NIST AI Safety Consortium Year 1 Updates

The beginning of this year marked the first anniversary of our participation in the NIST AI Safety Consortium. It's been a pleasure to immerse ourselves in emerging technologies that are taking the world by storm. Our intention at the NIST has been to share our scientific and commercial understanding of AI adoption, risks, and opportunities. We joined these working groups, you can find their descriptions here:

  • Risk Management for Generative AI
  • Synthetic Content
  • Red-Teaming

We're pleased to make notable contributions to the NIST, including, but not limited to:

  • Work Products from our Human Quirks project at humanquirks.com
  • Observations on the adoption and use of AI in educational settings, such as our Coding Camps for grade school students.

🚧 Hack On Democracy, our new research project! 🚧

In Q1 of 2025, we launched a new project to explore ways to use our understanding of technology to design resilient democratic systems. The United States of America, its multi-level Constitutional Republic features (local, state, federal), the current political climate, social determinants, oppressive threats, and the socioelcological environment encompassing its People, in aggregate, make for rich learning experiences and test bed for some of our latest prototypes. Simply scrumptious. 🍰

About Civic Hacker

Civic Hacker is the home of Public Interest Technology. The fastest way to catch up is:

Company Background

Founded in 2012, Civic Hacker LLC provides technology services to organizations desiring to make a positive social impact. Combining multiple domains of study, we create projects and initiatives as opportunities to engage with local stakeholders to solve social problems and share knowledge beyond the technical community. Civic Hacker's mission is to use software, policy, and data to empower activists and engineer liberation. We've developed a theory of change called anti-oppressive technology, which states that we can address the threats created by oppressive systems by developing technology that liberates communities and unites us together as one people. Civic Hacker's goal is to, sustainably, create a positive social impact consumed through our technology services and supported by the public.
