Principle 2. Users are the Fundamental Reason for Archival Description.

Principle 10. Archivists must have a user-driven reason to enhance existing archival description.

Chapter 9, on Archival Authority Records has an additional "Statement of Principles" and "Levels of Description" specifically for authority records. Should these labels be changed/updated to avoid confusion with other sections of DACS?

I expect that this will require a

  • Minor change to DACS
  • Major change to DACS

The most basic fix we could do here is to re-label the section as "Rationale," or with the last paragraph in the section, perhaps "Rationale and Scope." Moving the last paragraph in this section up to be the last paragraph of the previous section would also be an option (in that case, just "Rationale" for a section title). Revising this section, though, would also be an opportunity to align the rationale more closely with the Statement of Principles.
