According to the docs, the path argument "Defaults to the request URI." As far as I can find, though, it defaults to unset. I don't (yet) have an example of impact from this discrepancy, but I'm trying to understand cookie details.

Both is kinda true. Yes, omitting the path argument means that it is not set. But omitting path in a cookie means that it only matches to the URI that requested it
