Colons can be used to align columns.

Tables Are Cool
col 3 is right-aligned $1600
col 2 is centered $12
zebra stripes are neat $1

There must be at least 3 dashes separating each header cell. The outer pipes (|) are optional, and you don’t need to make the raw Markdown line up prettily. You can also use inline Markdown.

Markdown Less Pretty
Still renders nicely

Blockquotes are very handy in email to emulate reply text. This line is part of the same quote.

Quote break.

This is a very long line that will still be quoted properly when it wraps. Oh boy let’s keep writing to make sure this is long enough to actually wrap for everyone. Oh, you can put Markdown into a blockquote.

Here’s a line for us to start with.

This line is separated from the one above by two newlines, so it will be a separate paragraph.

This line is also a separate paragraph, but… This line is only separated by a single newline, so it’s a separate line in the same paragraph.

Let’s break it down: this is possible thanks to Jekyll Jupyter Notebook plugin that allows you to embed jupyter notebooks in your posts. It basically calls jupyter nbconvert --to html to convert the notebook to an html page and then includes it in the post. Since Kramdown is the default Markdown renderer for Jekyll, we need to surround the call to the plugin with the ::nomarkdown tag so that it stops processing this part with Kramdown and outputs the content as-is.

The plugin takes as input the path to the notebook, but it assumes the file exists. If you want to check if the file exists before calling the plugin, you can use the file_exists filter. This avoids getting a 404 error from the plugin and ending up displaying the main page inside of it instead. If the file does not exist, you can output a message to the user. The code displayed above outputs the following:

Note that the jupyter notebook supports both light and dark themes.

                      - Schilder Lab

                      Welcome to the Schilder Lab

We study Animal Locomotion through the lens of Comparative Physiology & Biomechanics

This site is under construction - 07/14/23

Animals vary dramatically in size and weight, inhabit a variety of environments (air, water, terrestrial) and experience fluctuating environmental conditions. All animals need to move their bodies through these variable environments and most do so quite well. We seek to understand the morphological and physiological adaptations that allow animals to optimally support and move their body, and how these mechanisms are affected by the biotic and abiotic environment. Projects in the lab focus mainly on insect movement, but we don’t shy away from studying other organisms!

                      Position available: Research Technologist

The Schilder Lab seeks a research technician to support laboratory research on the biomechanics, physiology, and energetics of insect locomotion. The lab tends to operate at interfaces of biology and mechanical engineering, so the person hired in this position ideally should have some previous research experience in these realms of science, but this is not a requirement. Additionally, skills in manufacturing, electronics, and coding/scripting (e.g., MATLAB, python, etc.) are highly desirable. Independent research is supported and encouraged but is not part of regular duties. The person hired in this position will also aid graduate students in the lab and will assist with basic lab management (e.g., ordering supplies, submitting p-card receipts, laboratory inspections, etc.). The position requires a B.S. degree or higher in biology, entomology, mechanical engineering, or related discipline. This position would be ideal for a post-bac student seeking research experience prior to completing advanced degree studies. The position is open to anyone with the legal ability to begin working in the US. Start date is negotiable, but a summer 2024 start is desirable. This will be a benefited, full-time research technologist position. The initial appointment is for one year, re-appointment is contingent upon job performance. An official posting of this job opening will be forthcoming, but interested applicants can contact Ruud Schilder at rjs360@psu.edu right now.

                      projects

The ability to direct movement through the environment is crucial to animal fitness. Movement enables organisms to acquire food, avoid becoming food, and find and attract mates. The incredible range in animal size, evolutionary origin, and environmental pressures to do these things most optimally has led to a wide variety in locomotor design and performance range. Yet, most of these designs are built from a very similar set of of biological components. We are generally interested in the identity of mechanisms that allow(ed) this variation in design and performance to evolve in phylogenetically distinct species, but currently focus our work on mechanisms that control phenotypic plasticity in design and performance within single species. Interestingly, our work has demonstrated that at least one of these mechanisms is highly conserved across evolutionarily distant animal species.

                      ongoing research

Current work in the lab aims to determine (1) mechanisms by which skeletal muscle responds to changes in body weight (e.g., loading, natural growth), energy availability and body temperature, and how environmental factors such as diet and infectious disease (2) interact with these mechanisms to determine locomotor phenotypes observed in nature, across an evolutionarily diverse set of animal species. Our work requires a multi-disciplinary approach, combining techniques from biomechanics and electrophysiology, behavioral ecology, ecological and molecular physiology, and broad sense functional genomics. Research projects in the lab and the animal models central to them therefore tend to vary in nature. As indicated earlier, most animals use skeletal muscles, and basic skeletal muscle structure and composition is highly conserved among animals. So, in order to derive general rules that govern how animals modify locomotor function in response to internal and external cues, we can and should study many animals that differ in locomotion type.
