Sounds like this is a rubinius compatibility issue. Spring has not been test with rubinius. I've re-titled this bug to indicate the rubinius link.

I've just tested with rbx 2.2.5 and seems that the binstub command doesn't work but spring rspec and spring status works correctly, this is my log when running rspec:

I'm not sure it's the correct log for an application but after some calls spring status gives the same PID for the processes and the run time is lower compared to plain rspec

Changing the initializer with rails server running instead, raises an error:
