A user reports that the multiple Source meta boxes (Source URL and Additional Source URIs) is confusing and that the Source URL box is generally not helpful as it is currently configured.

After reviewing a few redirection plugins, I tend to agree. The expected behavior for a redirection plugin is provide a Target URL and a Source URL. That's it. As it stands now, we auto-generate the Source URL (confusing) and then allow configuring additional Source URIs.

To improve this, I would like to consolidate the Source URL and the Additional Source URI meta boxes into a single Source URL meta box:

  • The auto-generated Source URL (the redirect permalink) should be referred to as Default Source URL, or even Auto-Generated Source URL and that should appear at the bottom of the Source URL meta box.
  • The An Additional Single Redirect URI or a Regular Expression Pattern field should be referred to simply as Source URI with a note below about how RegEx patterns can be used there.

Sounds great! From what you described, I'm imagining something like this. Might be cool if at some point there were + and - icons there too (beside each additional URI), so that WP Redirects could one day support multiple additional single redirects or multiple regex patterns too.

I love that!

Great idea! Thanks!
