What is the bug or the crash?

Turning the symbols on and off in the Layers window is not synchronized with the settings in the Symbology Properties. The behavior is generally strange. Additionally, the object count is displayed incorrectly. I've included a short recording of this in the attached GIF. Also the Example project is attached

It's weirder than that: In the Layer panel click on a row then check/uncheck its checkbox; moving through the list using the up and down arrow keys then deselects/selects the currently-selected item.

QGIS: 3.43.0-Master 51e66d6 (current Git master)
OS: Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS

I'm looking at some possibly-related code for an unrelated issue. Will comment here if I see anything apropos to these issues.
