fatal error: 'stdlib.h' file not found

Hi,

When trying to use the pybind11_mkdoc tool on the example in the README,it seems to work fine. However, if I add a standard include:

#include <string>

I get the error:

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/9/../../../../include/c++/9/cstdlib:75:15: fatal error: 'stdlib.h' file not found

Command: python -m pybind11_mkdoc example.hpp -o test.hpp appending -isystem /usr/include does not help.

I have this file in my /usr/include directory and the pybind11_mkdoc seems to be adding it to the include directories.

I have no other issues with clang / llvm. Any ideas?

System details:

Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

LLVM 9.0.0

clang version 9.0.0-2~ubuntu18.04.2 (tags/RELEASE_900/final)
Target: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
Thread model: posix

Making an attempt to clean up issues to find out which ones are still relevant, and which are so old they can be closed (as things are either fixed or this is a non-issue anymore). @matthewhagraphcore This looks like it is from multiple Ubuntu versions ago. Am I okay to close this, or is this still an issue for you?

I have had issues like this in the past on different OSs and had to include directories manually (more than just /usr/include); however, this works for me out-of-the-box on the Ubuntu 24.

EDIT: To clarify what I mean by "works-out-of-the-box", I ran the example from README.md with the inclusion of iostream in a docker container using this docker file:

FROM ubuntu:24.04

# Update package lists and install sudo
RUN apt update
RUN apt install -y sudo python3-dev python3-pip git llvm clang
RUN python3 -m pip install --break-system-packages git+https://github.com/pybind/pybind11_mkdoc.git@master
RUN python3 -m pip install --break-system-packages clang==18.*

and everything worked as expected. The only oddity in that docker image is installing the clang==18* python package. However, this is already being looked into here. I'm using Ubunut 24 rather than 18, since the newest version of pybind11-mkdoc does not support the Python versions available on Ubuntu 18.

@henryiii Would it be okay to close this issue? This now works as intended with the current version, with the only hiccup being installing a specific version of clang (the Python package), but I believe there are already other places (#32) where alternatives are being looked into to avoid that hiccup.
