HoloViz projects potential submissions #266

Hi all,

First of all, I apologize for not adopting one of your suggested issue templates! I have a question that should have been better suited for Discord, but from a glance, I wasn't sure which channel to post it in, and it didn't look very active. I'm happy to close this issue and continue the discussion somewhere else if that's more appropriate.

I'm a member of the HoloViz project whose aim is to make "data visualization in the browser easier and better" using Python. HoloViz has deep roots in scientific fields:

  • The original creators of the project all have academic backgrounds (computational neurosciences)
  • We manage to get grants to improve our tools in specific domains: in the past in the geo field which led to the creation of GeoViews for example, biomedical research in more recent years, see this blog post about improvements made to HoloViews and Bokeh thanks to a CZI grant.

Our tools also integrate well with the PyData ecosystem; they use and have compatibility layers with Pandas, Dask, Xarray, Matplotlib, Bokeh, Plotly, etc.

Given all the above, I started to think that a few of our libraries could be a pretty good fit for a pyOpenSci submission, as they can definitely support scientific research. Specifically, I thought about:

  • HoloViews: Data exploration and visualization, well-suited for multi-dimensional and complex datasets
  • Datashader: Render and identify patterns in very large datasets
  • Colorcet: Collection of perceptually accurate colormaps

However:

  • I'm not 100% sure they are a good fit?
  • I do not want us to be a burden on reviewers? For instance, a library like HoloViews has a pretty large API (10+ years old and actively maintained).

Could you please provide us with some feedback on potential submissions? :)
