Using Avro SchemaRegistry, topic keys not deserializing, but values are

I'm trying to figure out how to see proper key values in the messages view of kafka-ui for the keys of my topics.

My config:

        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_NAME: sdlc
        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_BOOTSTRAPSERVERS: kafka-bootstrap.staging.example.com:9096
        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_PROPERTIES_SECURITY_PROTOCOL: SASL_SSL
        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_PROPERTIES_SASL_MECHANISM: SCRAM-SHA-512
        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_PROPERTIES_SASL_JAAS_CONFIG: redacted
        KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_SCHEMAREGISTRY: https://avro-registry.staging.example.com

Everything has been working great except that I can't see the keys in my topic messages for some reason.

Is this expected? How is it that I can see the values and not the keys?

After a little more digging, I figured it out. The default serde for key is string but I can set it for SchemaRegistry according to the docs.
