In addition to the Directory Photo Source and the MTP Photo Source an Apple iPod/iPhone Photo Source should really be added.
At least on the iPod (Sep 2012 version) the photos taken using it are available on non-protected storage. You can observe this when connecting to a Windows 7 machine where the photos will appear accessible the explorer. (Strangely enough I haven't found a way to access them outside of iTunes on the mac yet.)
Since Windows can access them there is a way to get to these photographs, although I don't know how to do this from Java yet...
