Link editing in richtext ingredients not working

I recently upgraded to 7.3.3 from 7.1 and link editing in richtext ingredients have stopped working. Existing links will open the dialog but the value (either alchemy page or external link) are blank. Setting a new value doesn't change the markup. Similar failure when adding new elements. Try to add link to new text and the dialog shows but the text is not made into a link.

I have no customizations to TinyMCE in initializers.

It turns out the containing element was wrapped in a <a> tag and this disrupted the rendering and the admin editing of links in richtext.
