One of the major PITAs of helping map for OSM is when you have to stop one line you're working on just to insert a short line of something else before continuing with the original line.

The functionality of automatically adding a bridge or tunnel when a road crosses a river was really great, and made mapping a lot easier. But much, much more often than a road crossing a river, a sidewalk crosses a road. And every time that happens you have to stop, select pedestrian crossing, draw that, and then go back to the sidewalk to keep drawing that.

If the automatic bridge feature could be adjusted to also make pedestrian crossings for sidewalks automatically that would be such a time saver!

(In this screenshot there's not actually a pedestrian crossing. It's just an illustration.)

Thank you!

I just want to add that this is important because our infrastructure, including our digital infrastructure like maps, are too often car-centric. We need to get more people away from cars, over to walking and biking, but that's hard when so much is focused on making it easy to use cars and thus comparatively harder to walk/bike. Making it easier to map infrastructure for pedestrian will make sure that more infrastructure for pedestrians gets mapped, and so will help us in this shift away from car-centric to people-centric cities. :)

@forteller I'm all for making pedestrian mapping easier—most of my personal mapping consists of sidewalks and crossings. I like your idea, but this fix would be more complicated than the existing fixes so it'll take time to consider the full feasibility and user experience.

Hi again. Have you been able to consider this? :) Would you care to briefly explain why this is more complicated than the "add bridge/tunnel" feature? Thanks!

@forteller Sure, adding a full crossing would require connecting the lines in addition to splitting up one of the lines. The bridge/tunnel fixes only need splitting. There's also the issue of whether to present marked/unmarked options or not. This could bring fix list to six or seven entries, which risks overwhelming users.

That said, I'm more confident we should try to do this somehow.
