The footnotes are styled so they appear very small. Obvious styling (see first paragraph) can remedy overlooking them.

Another alternative is to add support for Bigfoot.js -- this will display footnotes in line, not scrolling to the end of the article: http://www.bigfootjs.com/

We use Pandoc to generate footnotes. As I first step I would do two things: change the CSS to make the footnotes look nicer, and think about what content goes into a footnote vs. a reference - something that is basically a link should be a reference rather than footnote.
