I was logged in and looking at other events outside of my area and thought I would decline the April meeting in Michigan (https://mappingdc.org/microcosms/events/5) by clicking "No". I got a page back, but then was immediately redirected to another page with a 403 Forbidden message. Is this because I'm not part of the Michigan microcosm? If that's the case, why am I allowed to click No in the first place?

My assumption seems to be correct. Joining the group and then declining the event works just fine.

So the question is, does a user need to belong to a microcosm in order to attend their events?

Generally I'd say events are open to the public. But maybe some groups want to keep it closed.

Let's think about this one.

IanH suggests prioritize members but don't stop a nonmember from attending an event if there are open spots.
