Screenshots not working with Android 23

At some point between the current version (2.7.2) and 2.3.1 screenshots with Android 23 (on emulator) is no longer working.
I see there has been some back and forth with the screenshot function since then, but some of the changes has made it no longer usable with Android 23.

Is "adb shell screencap" works?

It works, but it does not give a valid image file. And the error message when using the newer version of adbutils seems to be that it does not recognize the data returned/is unable to determine the image format.
