Austin Lead Map #131
Comments
Awesome idea! I worked in real estate and there is also a federally required lead disclosure on properties to 1980 or so. Portland and other cities are also interested in educating home gardeners, especially ones growing near homes. I'd like to help and learn maps and GIS, I have a list of all of the Austin STR/AirBnb permit addresses that I'd also like to visualize. I could host a meetup on South First or where are y'all meeting? |
I'm east, but maybe we could meet downtown? The central library is a good spot. Maybe we could drum up some more interest and then plan a work session. |
Sounds great!
Thank you,

I'm interested in helping with this. Are you still looking for bodies? I can help with cleanup of the raw data. |
Yes! I added the geocode tab like in the geocode tutorial above, but it didn't work for all of the data. I think I used up all of the google streets API I was allowed. Is there a work-around for this? You could also check the addresses and coordinates to make sure they match for the ones that are geocoded. |
Update - Thanks for finishing up the geocoding on the rest of the data! Next step- add as an XY event layer to ArcPro. Do y'all have AcrGIS? Should we use QGIS? I've never used it but pretty similar I think. |
Will you be at the meeting on Tuesday night? I'm not a huge fan of keeping the data in Google sheets and using ArcGIS. |
Cool, which and where is the Tues meeting? I'll try to be available.

I'll be there tonight. It's at the old central library - 800 Guadalupe - at 6:30 |
Since we have two inactive projects about mapping data about lead contamination, I'm closing the other one, #89. There are some research links in that thread, but they may not be 100% relevant because it dealt with lead pipes rather than lead in soil or paint. |
What problem are you trying to solve?
There is no comprehensive map of lead concentrations in soils in Austin. Lead is toxic when ingested - especially for children, damaging nervous system development.
Who will benefit (directly and indirectly) from your project?
All of us! Identifying areas of high lead concentrations would benefit the public health of Austin by reducing exposure. Analysis of the data could be used to support cleanup programs or funding of community initiatives in areas with higher concentrations.
What other resources/tools are currently serving the same need? How does your project set itself apart?
TCEQ regulates lead in soil and DSHS regulates lead-based paint abatement. The City of Austin has a Brownfields program that host a "soil kitchen" with the EPA every year to collect and test soil samples. They release the results as a spreadsheet with the street and cross street - but not spatially mapped.
Where can we find any research/data available/articles?
http://www.austintexas.gov/soilkitchen
https://environmenttexas.org/programs/txe/get-lead-out
What help do you need now?
Cleaning up the data - I compiled all of the four years of data into a google sheet with four tabs. I geocoded it using this tutorial: http://willgeary.github.io/data/2016/11/04/Geocoding-with-Google-Sheets.html, but there are still a lot of wrong locations. I also think I hit the limit on addresses you can geocode with the google API, so maybe someone else could do the rest? Eventually I want to put it in ArcPro, maybe make a viewer?
Here's the google sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1V6lZ9BT3ZH6d5v0YIjERR7cE7qKN_M9iXq8RXhndM5w/edit?usp=sharing
What are the next steps (validation, research, coding, design)?
Definitely validation, I think we might be able to work with the Brownfields office to fill in some of the empty fields and correct ones that don't make sense. Anyone with skills in GIS could help with making the map. Designing a viewer or way to make it interactive would be next.
How can we contact you outside of Github(list social media or places you're present)?
I'm on the slack (Junebug) and you can also email me at [email protected]

Checklist for NEW ideas 👶
Hey, you're official! You're now part of the growing civic hacking community in Austin. Here's a few things to get started (a couple you've probably already done).
Checklist for ACTIVE projects 🔥
Let's get this project started! When this idea starts taking off, the Projects Core Team will start helping this project's lead(s) out with project management and connecting you to resources you may need. To get there, please complete and check off the following:
backlog
so others know you'll get back to it when you have the time. If nobody hears from you at all in more than two months, we may mark it asabandoned
so that others can pick up this idea and run with it.Checklist for FEATURED Projects 🎉
To have your project FEATURED on Open-Austin.org, complete the following documentation. In past projects, well-documented featured projects have more contributions than other projects.
Add [my project] to projects page
. An Open Austin leader will review this issue and post your project 🎈If you get stuck at any point, feel free to reach out to the leadership team on Slack by adding @Leadership to your message. We're here to help you make real changes to our city.
