"select all" does not work in the search string text field

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Type something into the text field
2. Use the keyboard shortcut for select all or try to use the grayed-out
option from the Edit menu
3. nothing happens

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
all text should be selected. instead nothing happens

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
v1.6 on Mac OS X
