LyXHTML has some bugs, some of which are fixed in recent releases. It's not a faithful representation of .lyx, and this is the biggest issue.
It's also annoying to have to match on div[@Class=...] to deal with custom insets.
My github clone of LyX has a lyx2xml script that produces XML that is a faithful (schema-wise) representation of .lyx files. This repo has the beginnings of an XSL for translating that schema to xml2rfc. We should finish it!
An XSL for converting LyXML to .lyx would also be extremely helpful, as then we could write an XSL for converting xml2rfc to .lyx, which would allow us to get many more users for lyx2rfc.
We should also look at .lyx->LyXML then apply an XSL that turns metadata into LyX directives (e.g., make a table for the front page listing authors, add an unnumbered Authors section, etcetera) then convert back to .lyx. This approach would allow direct ->PDF and ->XHTML typesetting via LyX, with all the power of LyX.
